How We Care For The Land

Protecting land is only the beginning. At the Land Trust, we’re equally committed to the long-term stewardship of the properties we own and manage. Our Land Stewardship ensures that the places we protect today remain healthy and resilient for generations to come.

While not all protected properties are under our ownership, those that are require thoughtful, science-based care to support thriving ecosystems and enduring conservation impact.

Stewardship Priority

Wildfire Resilience and Recovery

The Land Trust has implemented strategic fuels reduction and wildfire protection projects across hundreds of acres of its lands to benefit local communities and residents. This includes prescribed burning, prescribed grazing, improving emergency access, establishing evacuation routes, reducing ladder and ground fuel loads, and installing shaded fuel breaks and ridgetop firebreaks. LTNC works closely with its partners at CAL FIRE, Napa County Fire and the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation to ensure this work is as effective as possible in protecting people and infrastructure during wildfires. Wildlife Monitoring

The Land Trust implements large-scale wildlife monitoring projects that have allowed us to document, quantify, and track the health of wildlife species and populations. This includes our motion activated camera-based Wildlife Picture Index (WPI) project. Through WPI, we’ve gained insight into a broad array of terrestrial mammals, from gray fox to mountain lion. The WPI project has yielded rare photo documentation of highly reclusive species such as ringtail and allowed us to document a particularly high density of one of our largest and most impressive mammals, the black bear. LTNC & Climate Change

The Land Trust is actively working to incorporate the challenges and threats posed by climate change into both its land conservation and natural resource management strategies, with a focus on protecting and restoring the ability of our local ecosystems to respond and adapt to warming temperatures. LTNC has dramatically increased its pace of land protection and stewardship throughout Napa County over the last five years to more effectively address these pressing issues. LTNC & Climate Change
