What We Do
The Land Trust works cooperatively with landowners and our community to protect agricultural land, water resources, wildlife and wildlife corridors, scenic open space, forests, ranches, wildflower meadows and native biodiversity throughout Napa County. We permanently protect land through the use of conservation easements that limit future development, or through direct land acquisition. By carefully prioritizing our activities the Land Trust has made significant progress toward creating a network of conservation lands that will continue to provide clean water, wildlife habitat and corridors, thriving agricultural lands, and access to nature for all those who live in and visit the Napa Valley.
How We Do It
Conservation Easements
We partner with landowners to develop customized conservation plans that permanently protect their land while allowing them to retain ownership. Through conservation easements, landowners voluntarily restrict future development on their property, ensuring that vital habitats, agricultural lands, and scenic views remain intact.
Land Acquisitions
To protect Napa’s most ecologically significant landscapes, the Land Trust directly purchases and acquires land. Napa County ranks among the highest in the nation for biodiversity, supporting rare species and fragile ecosystems. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we own and permanently protect important lands across Napa County — ensuring these natural areas remain in their natural state and thriving for generations to come.
Property Transfers
We work alongside local, state, and federal agencies—including California State Parks, County and City Parks, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife—to facilitate the protection of open spaces, parks, and natural resources. These efforts expand public lands, enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, and preserve critical wildlife corridors. Through these conservation strategies, the Land Trust is committed to safeguarding Napa’s landscapes forever.
Accreditations
Land Trust of Napa County is an Accredited land trust, a distinction awarded by the Land Trust Alliance that recognizes our commitment to the highest standards in land conservation, financial accountability, and ethical practices. This accreditation signifies that we meet rigorous national quality standards for protecting and stewarding the lands entrusted to us—forever.
As an Accredited Land Trust, we uphold strong legal and financial foundations, ensuring that every acre we conserve remains protected for future generations. This mark of excellence reflects our dedication to transparency, integrity, and lasting conservation impact.
