What a day on the land! Last week, we had the joy of welcoming the Advanced Digital Design class from New Technology High School to Mead Ranch Preserve for an immersive field experience unlike any other. In partnership with the Land Trust, the Napa County Office of Education, and their exceptional teacher, Mrs. Gottfried, students stepped into a landscape that quickly became both classroom and inspiration.
Art, Science, and Nature—All in One Place
This visit is part of an exciting creative collaboration preparing students for an upcoming sidewalk art installation that we can’t wait to see come to life. The moment the students set foot on the land, curiosity took the lead.
They wandered through the early stages of protected vernal pools, learning how these seasonal wetlands nurture rare species and sustain biodiversity across the landscape. They discovered vibrant fungi tucked beneath shaded oak woodlands. They pointed out bird species they had never seen before. Every turn revealed something new—something alive, beautiful, and brimming with ecological meaning.
Their teacher later described the experience perfectly:
“We were all like kids in a candy store, geeking out over never-before-seen birds and cool fungi. The land is truly special.”

A Rare Moment of Wonder
Midway through the morning, the group experienced a rare highlight. Our staff member, Connor, spotted a Northern Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium californicum (sometimes treated as G. gnoma)) perched quietly among the branches—an uncommon and thrilling sight. As if perfectly planned, Mrs. Gottfried had just the right camera gear ready and captured the moment beautifully. The gasp, the excitement, the cameras clicking—everyone felt the magic of that encounter.
Moments like these are why field experiences matter. They create memories that deepen students’ sense of place and strengthen their connection to the natural world.

Where Creativity Takes Root
Mead Ranch has long been a landscape that sparks wonder, and this visit was no exception. For these young creators, the land opened doors to creative thinking, scientific curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the environment they call home. The ideas they collected—through sketches, photos, conversations, and quiet observation—will soon inspire a public art installation that blends art, science, and nature in a truly meaningful way.
Gratitude for Partnership and Support
This field experience was made possible through collaboration and shared commitment.
A heartfelt thank-you to:
- Napa County Office of Education, for supporting outdoor learning opportunities that connect students to the land.
- Mrs. Gottfried, whose enthusiasm, preparation, and creativity continue to inspire her students.
- Our dedicated LTNC staff, who guided students through this unforgettable day.
We can’t wait to see how these talented young artists bring the spirit of Mead Ranch Preserve to life in their upcoming sidewalk installation. One thing is certain: the land left an impression—and the students will carry that inspiration forward.
