+++   2,000 to 3,000 ft (lots of uphill)
++++ over 3,000 ft (steep)

For example: M 3mi + is a moderately difficult 3-mile hike with less than 1,000 ft elevation gain.

How hard are our field trips?

The degree of difficulty of the hike is rated using the above Hike Ratings. Difficulty is determined by both distance and elevation gain.  All of our hike ratings assume a good level of physical fitness. Please note that these guidelines may not fully describe a hike’s difficulty.  For example, steep or rough terrain may make a short hike strenuous. Read the hike description carefully. Call the hike leader or The Land Trust if you have any questions. We want to be sure that the hikes you join match your expectations and needs.

Carpooling, Safety & Other Info

  • Typically, carpools for hikes leave from the parking lot by Blockbuster Video in the Bel Aire Plaza (off of Trancas near Highway 29) at 9 a.m. – BUT – each trip is different so check with the hike leader to be certain.
  • For hikes and work days, ALWAYS bring snacks, lunch, sunscreen, ample drinking water, wear sturdy hiking boots or trail runners (no Keds!), and appropriate clothing for weather protection from sun, rain, cold, or heat.
  • Heavy rain automatically cancels all outdoor field trips.
  • Field Trips fill up fast – sign up early!
